Reviewing the Bush2 record on the environment is why I think of his party as RepublORCans. NRDC: The Bush Record. In his essay, "Sustainable Communities and the Roles Libraries and Librarians Play," Reference and User Services Quarterly 42 [spring 2003], Frederick W. Stoss, Biological and Environmental Sciences Librarian at University Libraries, University at Buffalo, State University of New York describes the 2002 United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The linkage of poverty to environmental degradation (including the exploitation of natural resources)is underscored in his examination of the issues. Stoss notes, "Prior to the August 2002 gathering of the WSSD it was thought active U.S. participation at the highest levels would assure achieving the much-sought implementation of actions related to sustainable growth. President Bush's refusal to attend the South African event was seen by many as a failure of U.S. leadership to fully grasp the plight of the world's developing nations."
