The American Library Association Notable Books for 2005 were announced Sunday night, January 16, 2005 in Boston.

Winning fiction titles include:

The Swallows of Kabul by Yasmina Khadra; The Madonna of Excelsior. by Zakes Mda;
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell and Popular Music from Vittula by Mikael Niemi.

Winning non-fiction include:

Washington’s Crossing by David Hackett Fischer; Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib by Seymour M. Hersh; Outwitting History: The Amazing Adventures of A Man Who Rescued a Million Yiddish Books by Aaron Lansky; and One Man’s Castle: Clarence Darrow in Defense of the American Dream by Phyllis Vine.
